2023 Senior Pennants Royal Perth

Royal Perth’s Senior Men’s Pennants team put their name in the record books by winning the Division 1 title for the first time.

It was the culmination of a dominant series for the Royal Perth team (pictured above), who made a clean sweep of all five of their matches, amassing 22 points for and only three against throughout.

Notably, it also put an end to Hartfield’s hopes of completing a five-peat in the event with their team having won the Division 1 crown every year since 2018 – except when COVID stopped play in 2020. Indeed, besides Hartfield, only Lakelands (2017) had tasted success in the competition since Hartfield’s supremacy began in 2015.

Royal Perth’s team remained largely unchanged throughout the competition, with Michael Dennis, Peter Bennett, Sean Fairfoul, Andrew Brown and David Alexander contesting the majority of matches, with David Attwool and Mark Gatty each playing once.

They topped the table with 10 points from their five matches, with runners-up Hartfield on 8 points having lost only 1 match – the Round 2 clash against Royal Perth that ultimately proved to be the title decider.

At the wrong end of the table, Lake Karrinyup finished at the bottom of the ladder and will be relegated to Division 2 for the 2024 season. They’ll be replaced in the top flight by Cottesloe, who went unbeaten to clinch the Division 2 title ahead of Royal Fremantle.

Cottesloe’s triumph was all the more impressive given that they used only five players throughout the competition; team skipper David Stanton joined in the line-up by Peter Allison, Richard Ferreira, Michael Kessisoglou and Paul Patterson.

Summing up the Senior Pennants Season, GolfWA Operations Manager Neil Goddard said: “I congratulate not only Royal Perth and Cottesloe on their titles, but all the teams who contributed to such a positive competition once again.

“The matches were played with a great spirit of camaraderie and the standards were exceptional. We look forward to more of the same in 2024.”

Special mention must also go to The Vines, who secured an unprecedented seventh straight title. The Vines topped the North Division – Orange group and took on their Southern counterparts Mandurah in the Orange Division final at Rockingham, winning 4-1 overall.
