Volunteers from Pemberton Golf Club and the surrounding community are once again rolling up their sleeves for the greater good to rebuild the club’s buggy and tractor shed.

Having outgrown the previous shed, the club made the decision to pull it down and commence rebuilding work over the summer, with an army of volunteers and the support of local tradies helping make light work of the task.

The new shed is expected to cost in the region of $85,000, with all the money set to be raised through voluntary efforts rather than outside funding. Club and community members have been busy growing produce on land adjacent to the course, including potatoes, pumpkins and squash, which is picked and sold at markets in Perth.

The club also sells an avocado harvest from the 80 trees planted across the course, as well as raising funds through making and selling Italian sausages, growing and selling hay, and carrying out wood raffles.

Pemberton previously employed a similarly entrepreneurial spirit between 2014-2019, when a combination of fundraising, donations, grants and a loan helped them rebuild their clubhouse at a total cost of more than $400,000.

“We’ve been lucky enough to be able to rely on a lot of volunteer work and we’re indebted to local tradespeople, who have donated time and materials to help us keep costs down,” explained Pemberton Treasurer Bradley De Campo.

“A lot of the construction has also been ‘work in kind’ from skilled personnel within the club. We’ve done pretty well for a club with less than 40 members!”

Opened in 2019, Pemberton’s new clubhouse was largely funded by the work of volunteers

Once the buggy shed is completed, Pemberton is eyeing further enhancements to its outdoor amenities and ladies’ tees, as well as expanding the course’s two dams to improve irrigation, so their volunteer network may yet have its hands full again.

Anyone in the Pemberton vicinity during the June long weekend can inspect the fruit of the club’s labours and also participate in their big annual golf competition, the King Karri Kup.

Now in its 64th year, there’s a 4BBB pairs event on Saturday, June 3, for men’s women’s or mixed pairs, with an individual men’s Stableford event the next day. The club will be laying on a free bus between the club and the town on both nights.
